A direct ScotRail train is the way to do this. From Dundee it takes about 58 minutes to Stirling on a typical run, 49 on the quickest, and makes two stops on the way. On the weekday timetable we checked there were 30 departures between 05:48 and 22:01, which works out at about two an hour for most of the day, though the gaps between Dundee departures vary from about a quarter of an hour to three quarters. The earliest train found, the 05:48, has you in Stirling before seven on a typical run.
The pattern changes after six. Until the 18:08 there is a Stirling train from Dundee every half hour or so, but then the gaps open up: the departures found were 18:56, 19:47, 21:02, 21:15 and 22:01. If you are heading over after work, the hour and a quarter between the 19:47 and the 21:02 is the one to plan around.
The 22:01 itself is worth knowing about too. It is the final direct Dundee–Stirling train on the weekday list, so missing it leaves only the much slower routes below.
The planner did produce alternatives with a change at Edinburgh Waverley, Falkirk Grahamston or Haymarket, but each took more than two hours, between 2h 13m and 2h 18m, over double the direct train. None of them leaves Dundee during that evening gap either: the Edinburgh Waverley ones went at 13:18 and 22:12, the Haymarket one at 22:12 and the Falkirk Grahamston one at 19:15. Unless you are stuck after the 22:01 has gone, the direct Stirling train is always the better choice.
It is about seven minutes from Stirling station to King Street, some 425 metres on foot, so allow a little over an hour from leaving Dundee to reaching the centre.
Journey times and changes below come from the rail and bus timetables for Tuesday 1 December 2026. Weekend and holiday timetables differ, so check the day you travel.
